Jobs for people, people for jobs

One of Edinburgh's oldest peripheral housing schemes, Craigmillar dates from around 1920. Taking its name from the ancient Craigmillar Castle, the estate was previously owned by the Wauchope family. When the city extended its boundary, the neighbouring villages of Craigmillar, Newcraighall and The Jewel were annexed, and became what is now the Greater Craigmillar area.

Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s the brewing and mining industries, and Craigmillar Creamery offered employment to local people, but since the 1960s these traditional industries have disappeared, giving rise to many of the social and economic problems that the area experiences today.

Established in June 1998 through the Craigmillar European Partnership, WorkTrack is one of a number of organisations in Craigmillar assisting the regeneration objectives for the area.
